Apple Maps is going to get a lot more useful in iOS 10

Apple is opening up Maps to third-party developers, allowing for users to perform certain tasks within the Maps app. For example, you could request an Uber or book a reservation on OpenTable while using Maps without having to open another app separately.

You can also use Apple Pay within the app to pay for your Uber or Lyft. 

The new design will also allow users to search for a variety of things based on his or her route. For example, if you've entered your destination, you can then search for restaurants or gas stations along the way.

The updated system will even tell you how much longer it will take to arrive with stops included. 

Maps will also be able to make proactive suggestions based on where you are likely to go. For example, it can check your calendar and see when you have an appointment so when you open the app it will present a route to the location of your next meeting without you having to enter the address.

You can also filter choices simply within the app. For example, if you are searching for restaurants nearby, you can narrow your search by selecting the type of cuisine at the bottom of the screen and only restaurants in that genre will appear.

As for the interface, users will now be able to swipe to move the view while navigation is underway.

You can also pan and zoom to view the traffic conditions while the system is navigating. 

The app will also include dynamic view, which will change the appearance of the map based on your location. So if you are in the city, it will show you a closer view of the streets, but if you are on a straightaway your view will be wider.

The updated Maps will work on CarPlay. And to make it's safe to use the system, users will have the option of getting turn-by-turn directions in the instrument cluster so they can keep their eyes on the road.
