Beau Biden has died after battling brain cancer.
Biden's death was announced in a statement from Vice President Joe Biden's office Saturday night.
Beau Biden, 46, served two terms as Delaware's attorney general before joining the investor law firm Grant & Eisenhofer this year.
Biden said last year that he would run for governor of Delaware in 2016, but questions about his health loomed, as he had been hospitalized on several occasions since at least 2010.
The statement from Joe Biden's office reads in part: "The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words. We know that Beau’s spirit will live on in all of us, especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children, Natalie and Hunter."
Biden suffered various medical setbacks over the years, including a mild stroke in 2010. In 2013, he underwent treatment for what the White House called "disorientation and weakness" at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Doctors there removed a small lesion from his brain.
Biden was also admitted to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center for treatment earlier this month, but the details of that hospitalization were not disclosed at the time.
Biden has been lauded for his dedication to service, which included a one-year tour in Iraq where he served as captain in the Delaware Army National Guard, Reuters reports.
President Obama likened Beau to his vice president father, saying "He studied law, like his dad, even choosing the same law school. He chased a life of public service, like his dad."
Beau Biden's death is another blow to the vice president, who lost his wife and daughter in a car crash shortly after his Senate election in 1972.
The White House tweeted this video of Joe Biden along with the message, "Our thoughts and prayers are with @VP Biden and his family after the passing of his beloved son, Beau Biden."
