Switching chatbots comes with tradeoffs — just ask recent ChatGPT users who defected to Claude.

A Washington scuffle between Anthropic and the Pentagon has some users changing their chatbot of choice after OpenAI swooped in and reached an agreement of its own. The move caused a surge in support for Anthropic, with Claude dethroning ChatGPT and hitting No. 1 in the App Store over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Google's Gemini has been racing to catch up with ChatGPT, and offers some features that Claude doesn't.

As users debate which chatbot to use, they should know what features each model has — and what they're potentially giving up if they do switch.

For those using the free versions of these chatbot apps (with the most updated models available), let this chart be your guide.
