Whether you have a sprawling yard or simply want to spend less time mowing, the best robot lawn mowers could change the way you care for your lawn — and leave you with more time to enjoy your yard, not maintaining it. I personally have come to love sitting on my deck, drink in hand, watching a robot do it for me; that is just so futuristic and neat. It satisfies my inner nerd and helps me reclaim an hour of my week every spring through fall.

Advances in GPS navigation and wireless mapping have made autonomous mowers (and snow blowers) easier to set up and more reliable. In many ways, they're fast becoming the outdoor version of the best robot vacuums, quietly doing the work while you spend your time elsewhere. After testing 12 models over two years across varied terrain, setup friction, and obstacle avoidance, only a handful proved dependable enough to replace a traditional gas or electric lawn mower. Fortunately, I have some favorites.

Most robot mower issues arise from lawn layout, obstacles, and signal weakness, not the mower itself. That's why choosing the right type matters more than choosing the most expensive or feature-packed model.

The Segway Navimow X350 is the most reliable robot mower I evaluated, delivering a clear satellite connection and a pristine cut. Unlike competitors that stall when satellite reception dips, the X350 never lost signal once during testing. Its 9-inch cutting deck and nimble drive system tackled tall grass, damp turf, leaves, and rough ground with ease, completing over a third of an acre in just 47 minutes.

The Segway Navimov was the simplest to set up. I got it up and mowing right out of the box using only the app. The reference station mounts directly onto a spike driven into the ground, immediately receives satellite signals without interference from trees or buildings, and doesn't drop the signal or connection to the app. Mapping is equally seamless: rather than placing manual boundary pins, you steer the mower around your yard's edge using your phone like a remote control while the app continuously traces the perimeter. It was even able to detect when the charging station was moved and locate the new spot without requiring manual map updates. As an added touch of fun, the mower features a digital marquee that displays cute, humanoid-like messages and pictures when it's mowing, charging, or performing other functions.

Despite its steep price tag and minor terrain limits, it remains the pinnacle of wire-free lawn care. As the second most expensive model in Segway's X3 lineup—which comprises four options for lawns ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 acres—the $2,799 X350 is recommended for properties up to 1.5 acres. During testing, the unit struggled with foot-wide ground holes and raised wooden driveway borders. However, its fast mowing speed, rock-solid satellite connection, and intuitive software make it the absolute best pick for homeowners seeking a truly hands-off routine.

The Greenworks AI Mowbot C20 is a solid value option that can tackle up to half an acre. It’s best for flat yards without a lot of overhead cover, as it does use satellite navigation, but it performed as well as many fancier and pricier models.

The Greenworks AIMowbot C Series is a great budget-friendly choice for fairly flat, simple yards. Greenworks makes other robot mowers that are better suited for hills and rough ground, but they cost more.

Set-up was mostly simple, but I did run into one frustrating issue. Setting up the dock required unlatching stiff plastic clips to secure the wires inside, a step omitted from the manual, but I eventually pried it open with a corkscrew. Once I got past that, programming the mower was mostly straightforward. The AiMowbot uses satellite navigation and requires a reference station antenna, but it didn't have the satellite connection problems we experienced with some other robot mowers.

The biggest drawback was the AiMowbot's two-wheel design. It was the only mower I tested that got stuck in a shallow ditch. The Mowbot also struggled more on uneven ground and in valleys as its large rear wheels could dig into softer or wetter ground.

Overall, this is a case of you get what you pay for. The mower has some things going for it. Its smaller size makes it good at getting close to edges. It could handle inclines and obstacles. It also has one of the widest ranges we tested, both for lawn size and cutting height. It handled wet grass and light drizzle well, too. And at about 1.5 feet per second, it moves along at a good pace while staying whisper quiet. The battery lasts about an hour. For a smaller, mostly flat lawn, the AIMowbot C Series is a simple and reliable budget pick. Just don't expect it to handle rough or uneven ground as well as more expensive models.


Best for small yards

The Worx Landroid has all the power of larger models, but its smaller mowing width and slower speed make it better suited to yards of a quarter acre or smaller. (Worx does make models for yards up to 1.5 acres). Like the Navimow, it is a rugged machine designed for tough terrain with Four Wheel Drive. Unlike the Navimow, it doesn't use a boundary wire or reference station, which is convenient. I also love that the battery is easily accessible and can be used interchangeably with other Worx-brand tools.

The biggest downside is getting started. The quick-start guide omits key assembly steps — such as prying open a hidden rear panel on the charging tower to connect the power cable — and I found some combinations in the manual to be unclear. The mower also required multiple firmware updates and a call to customer support before I could finish setting up. The unit also stalled during auto-mapping and failed to toggle into manual remote-control mode to steer back to base. This meant I had to carry it, which wasn't easy because the mower itself is heavy and I was exposed to sharp blades.

Routine mowing performance was smooth once I got past setup, though. The app is simple and reliable, and mapping the lawn was easy. Unlike previous Worx robomowers, the Vision Cloud lets you choose patterns for mowing, including stripes, checkerboards, and diamonds. It automatically returns to the dock when the battery drains after its one-hour runtime. While its top speed (approx. 1 mph) is roughly half that of the Segway Navimow, its independent rear suspension easily handles hills, valleys, yard debris, and even wet ground without getting stuck. Its smaller size is a real plus, too. One drawback is that its minimum cutting height of 1.5 inches is higher than any mower I tested.

Overall, the Landroid is a solid workhorse with a strong 3-year warranty. It is big enough for a decent-sized yard but small enough to handle tight corners and edges. Once I got through setup, it was smooth sailing, which is why I recommend the Landroid for small-yard owners who want wire-free convenience without paying premium prices.


Best for large yards

With the widest cutting path and fastest speed of anything I tested, the Segway X4 Navimow tackles yards up to one acre with ease. It also has four-wheel drive and zero-turn technology, so it can get into tight spaces and handle tough terrain and steep slopes, too.

The Segway X4 Navimow emerged as a clear winner for large lawns and rough terrain. Combining four-wheel drive and a wide 17-inch cutting width to handle a variety of conditions, the X4 handled 4- to 5-inch grass (even though it is not advised to cut grass that high), thick sticks, old leaves, and seed pods without much trouble. It also traversed a wooden driveway barrier and uneven low spots in the lawn better than the previous Navimow I tested.

The setup is straightforward once the satellite reference station is positioned. Placing the reference antenna in my yard, which has a lot of tree cover, was a little tricky, but Bluetooth pairing and yard mapping were simple. Like my experience with the Navimow X350, which was one of the easiest robot mowers to get running, the X4 was just as intuitive.

Its wide cutting deck covers ground quickly, though its bulk hinders edge trimming. The X4 is fast for a robot mower, too, covering three feet per second, and I was impressed by how it tackled steep inclines and rough areas while also executing surprisingly tight turns for such a large machine. But its size is also its biggest weakness. It didn't get as close to the edges as we'd like, and it was harder to use manually for trim work.

The obstacle avoidance and navigation weren't foolproof. The X4 got tangled in a metal dog lead left on the ground and missed a fairly large, unmowed patch of grass within the mapped area. Outside these errors, it cut the grass at a uniform height and created a neat diamond pattern. If you can keep the ground clear of ground debris, the X4's premium price feels justified by its rugged design, long battery life, three-year warranty, and helpful customer service.

The Sunseeker S4 robot mower stands out for its effortless setup and reliable lidar (laser-based) navigation. One of the biggest barriers to robot lawn mowers is the complicated setup, but this mower doesn't rely on satellite connectivity, so it doesn't require a separate antenna. Instead, it uses 3D lidar (Light Detection and Ranging), the same technology found in some self-driving cars. and works by bouncing laser light off objects. The advantage is that you don't need to worry about losing satellite signal, which can happen when trees or other objects get in the way.

With no reference station or boundary wire, you can just unbox the Sunseeker S4, plug it in, and scan a QR code to download the app. You will have to complete a firmware update. Because the Sunseeker uses LiDAR, you need to remove the lens cover before use and keep the lens clean for it to work. This has been fairly easy to do, but it is an extra step before operating.

The S4 was impressive for such a small, lightweight machine with a simple nav system. It has a unique three-wheel design, and the two larger rear wheels can handle fairly steep inclines and damp grass without trouble. They never got stuck. This mower's small size helped it get close to edges and around curved flower beds. It did miss a few spots for no clear reason, but then, lidar technology is new, and there may still be kinks to work out. The S4 also had some neat features. The rain sensor immediately locked the mower down (you are not supposed to use them in rain even though they can withstand being wet) when splashed. This mower also has a cleaning brush built into the top of the charging station that will clean the mower as it docks, which was especially useful when pollen was heavy. I'd love to see this feature on more robot mowers.

This machine is quiet and dependable, with a mid-range price tag, but there are a few small trade-offs. Installing the cleaning brush was harder than it should have been. It didn't snap into place easily; the back of the dock got scratched during installation. The S4 has the smallest cutting width (7 inches) and the fewest cutting-height choices of the mowers we tested. It also takes slightly longer to charge than it takes to run. And while the app was fairly easy to use, getting help from tech support was difficult. But for people who want a decent robot mower and don't have an overly complicated yard, this machine can be a very effective and convenient tool.

What else we tested

  • Luba Mini AWD: I love this mower, and it's the one I've been using for the past year. It handled tough terrain well, was easy to use, rarely missed a patch of grass, and even looked cute doing it. However, it's been discontinued for the Luba Mini 2, which trades a traditional external RTK reference station setup for a LiDAR-based system, moves from a single cutting disc to dual cutting discs, and offers a larger cutting range. We haven't tested it yet, so we're not able to officially recommend it, but given our previous experience with the Mammotion brand, it's definitely something to think about.
  • Husqvarna iQ 410: This wire-free robot lawn mower for medium to large-sized lawns worked well once I got it going, but setup was more complicated than some of the others we tested. I also had trouble with it losing satellite contact, even when there were no trees or other objects overhead. It may be a better fit for a yard with a clear view of the sky and few trees or other obstacles. It has good good Anti-theft and security features and left a clean cut.
  • Gardena 2025 SILENO flex Robotic Lawn Mower: This $600 mower is the least expensive we tested, but requires installing a boundary wire, which takes some work. It also lacks some features found on newer models, like the ability to adjust cutting height settings from the app. It may make sense if you want a basic, low-cost mower, but newer models now offer more for a similar price.
  • Eufy E15/E18: The Eufy E15/E18 uses cameras to map the yard and avoid obstacles, rather than the laser-based LiDAR systems or RTK antennas used by some other mowers, making for a more plug-and-play setup. In our testing, it was less accurate and often wandered, sometimes even crossing into a neighbor's yard. It's best for a small, enclosed space where there's less chance of it wandering off.

What to look for in the best robot lawn mowers

  • Navigation technology and setup effort: Decide between physical boundary wires and wire-free virtual mapping (my preference).

    • Boundary wires require labor-intensive perimeter installation, involving manually staking or burying a continuous wire along your lawn's perimeter and around obstacles, so the signal never gets lost.
    • Wire-free systems (RTK satellite, 3D lidar, and AI vision) allow you to trace virtual borders in a smartphone app within minutes. RTK satellite models offer high precision for large, open lawns but require clear sky visibility to prevent signal drops under tree canopies. Standalone 3D lidar is ideal for small to mid-sized shaded yards where 360-degree lasers can bounce off nearby structures, though lenses require routine cleaning. Camera-based AI vision offers easy unboxing, but can struggle with harsh sunlight glare or deep shadows.
  • Yard Size, terrain, and slope limits: Match the mower's rated acreage capacity to your property size. Most robot lawn mowers can handle a maximum area (and price increases with capacity). Mowers work best on level ground, and the maximum slope any of the robot lawn mowers we tested could handle was 34 degrees.
  • Cutting deck width and height ranges: Wide cutting decks clear large acreage significantly faster, while narrow decks navigate tight garden borders and curved flower beds with greater agility. Always check the minimum cutting height if you prefer low-cut turf. Most manuals recommend frequent cuttings and not letting the grass get too tall, and don't advise cutting wet grass.
  • Obstacle avoidance and safety sensors: This can be very important if you have children or pets who tend to leave unexpected objects in the yard, or if you want it to avoid certain plants or furniture. Look for optical or radar sensors that detect low-profile ground clutter, lawn furniture, and stray pet leads. Essential safety features include auto-blade shutoff when lifting, rain-shutdown sensors, and PIN/GPS anti-theft tracking.
  • Maintenance & docking convenience: Account for routine upkeep, such as seasonal blade replacements and sensor lens cleaning. Models with self-cleaning dock brushes, easily removable batteries, and weather-sealed housings minimize manual upkeep over time. Also consider whether your mower can be stored outside (i.e., is weather-resistant) or requires a sheltered location.
  • Price vs. value: The robot lawn mowers I tested ranged from $600 to $3,500, and this is reflected in their coverage area, navigation systems, and smart features. However, consider the overall value — including ease of setup, reliability, app experience, and long-term maintenance costs.

I tested each mower on my 0.35-acre lawn in a tree-covered suburban neighborhood. My yard has three distinct mowing zones: a rectangular strip beside the driveway with a large trampoline, plus front, side, and back areas with flower beds, bushes, and trees. The steepest slope on my property is about 25 degrees.

I tested each mower at least three times under different conditions to see how well it could handle various mowing scenarios, including on grass, grass covered with leaves, during the day, at night, and after it had recently rained. 

I unboxed each mower and noted how easy or time-consuming it was to set up, charge, and start mowing. I also evaluated how intuitive and functional each companion app was. I tinkered with features like manual mowing, auto-mapping, scheduled mowing, night mowing, camera and light functions, auto-recharge, mowing patterns, object detection, and anti-theft and safety settings. I also recorded each mower's battery life and tracked how well the app interface, Bluetooth connection, and notifications performed.

Can robot mowers replace traditional mowers?

"They often aren't a perfect replacement for traditional mowers, but that doesn't mean they can't be quite helpful," said Steve Corcoran, CEO of Lawn Love, who recommends them as convenient for people who don't have the time or physical ability to mow manually and appropriately sized lawns that aren't too big for these mowers to handle.

"They also take up far less storage space than traditional mowers, they're a lot quieter, they're lower maintenance, and due to being electric rather than gas, they are more eco-friendly. Some cons are the fact that they have a limited battery life, which can result in not being able to mow an entire yard on one charge, and not being able to handle various things, such as obstacles in the lawn well ( like fallen pine cones, lawn toys, puddles, etc.).

Do robot lawn mowers work on uneven or sloped lawns?

Yes, many robot mowers can handle at least some grade, although the amount that can be handled varies among brands. The largest slope we tested was 25 degrees, but some manufacturers, like Navimow, claim their machines can handle up to 40 degrees.

What maintenance do robot lawn mowers need?

Robot lawn mowers still need occasional maintenance, including light cleaning and blade replacement. If you live in a climate with extreme temperatures, you will need to prepare your mower for winter, such as removing the battery or bringing the mower indoors if temperatures drop too low.

Are robot lawn mowers safe around pets and kids?

Every mower we tested had safety features such as object avoidance and stopped when encountering people or pets. Most mowers also have an alert that sounds when the mower is lifted to expose the blades, and they will automatically shut off.

Can robot lawn mowers handle wet grass?

It is not recommended to use a mower during rain or on completely wet grass, but many models have some degree of water resistance. In our tests, most were able to cut damp grass without issue.

Do you need to pick up leaves, toys, or any other debris first?

It is a good practice to clean the yard of any large objects or pet waste before mowing. Robot lawn mowers can handle grass and leaves, and most have object detection to avoid obstacles, but the blades can be damaged by rocks, large sticks, or other objects.
