When done right, blazers can be a star player in your wardrobe. They can take you from work to the weekend, add a bit of polish to an otherwise casual look, and even be worn as outerwear when temperatures begin to warm.
As a fashion writer and plus-size fashion expert, I get to test out a lot of options and hear feedback directly from my industry peers, so I've amassed quite a bit of knowledge about what is on the market and what is worth investing in.

Whether you live in a warm climate or just want to have cute blazers in rotation for summer months, finding a great lightweight blazer feels like a wardrobe victory. When I am shopping for warmer temperatures, I always look for breathable natural fabrics like linen and cotton (because who wants to be sweating in a poly blend in August?).
Natural fibers address that issue but also add the challenge of keeping the look sharp. Depending on the style, linen, in particular, can look very relaxed, which is not going to be the desired look for everyone. But if you want breathable fibers without the crunchy aesthetic, this linen-cotton blend blazer from Marcella NYC is an excellent option.
The structure built into the bodice keeps things looking sharp without being overly stuffy, giving it the versatility it takes for a true work-to-weekend-ready piece. I wore it more casually, with a bodysuit, Mary Jane ballet flats, and mesh maxi skirt from plus vintage favorite Berriez, and loved the effect. For the office, it would look great over a crisp button-down or a sleek sheath dress. Best budget: The Drop
If you are the type of shopper who loves to find a style that fits and buy it in multiple colors, this blazer from Amazon's The Drop should be on your radar. The one-button, single-breasted silhouette is versatile and classic, and the affordable price point makes getting a few colors less daunting as a splurge. More importantly, though, it stands up to regular wear.
Jewel Elizabeth, author of The Encyclopedia of New York Fashion, has a collection of her own and recommends it heartily: "This Blake Blazer from Amazon's The Drop is so good I have it in 3 colors. It fits a woman's body, can be thrown in the wash, and comes in a ton of solids and prints."
That's no overstatement about the options, either: There are currently 23 (!!!) different colorways available to order on Amazon, ranging from basic black to vibrant red to silver sequin to blue velvet to soft sage. It is well-reviewed, too, with a 4+ star rating and over 8,000 reviews. The biggest qualm people seem to have with it is that it can wrinkle easily, so keep that in mind if wrinkle resistance is a high priority for you
Best classic: Argent Single-Button Blazer
If you are looking for the type of gorgeous classic wool blazer you'll have for a lifetime, Argent should be on your radar. This woman-owned NYC label makes the platonic ideal of this wardrobe staple, with a "seasonless" 98% wool blend purported to be "naturally temperature regulating and odor and wrinkle resistant" — and it lives up to the claims.
I wore it on a day when the temperatures fluctuated wildly (from overly heated cafés to a balmy spring afternoon to a suddenly freezing evening), and I was comfortable—and gloriously unrumpled—throughout. The Seasonless Wool Blazer even kept its shape after being tossed haphazardly in a restaurant booth during dinner—a true testament to its wrinkle resistance!
This fabric is excellent, and if you love it as much as I do, you are in luck: This particular blazer is available in 13 different colors, and there are other styles offered in the same signature wool blend, including a relaxed peak lapel blazer and a cool wrap vest (which looks fantastic on a curvy figure). I've found their sizing to be relatively true to size - my only suggestion is to size up in their double-breasted styles if you have a fuller bust and want the option to wear them buttoned up.
Best for finding your perfect fit: Laws of Motion Omega Blazer
There's a reason this innovative, size-inclusive label made my list of best plus-size workwear: They make excellent blazers. From chic longline versions to cheeky cropped tweed numbers, Laws of Motion has been a go-to recommendation for blazers for a while now. I got a chance to preview their newest offering, the Omega Blazer, a classic lapel blazer launching this week, and it is just as fantastic as I've come to expect from this woman-owned brand. I tried it in this classic camel hue that works just as well with slacks for the office as it does with baggy jeans and a cashmere crop top for the weekend.
I personally love their fit as a plus-size shopper with a full bust, but this isn't a brand that works for just one body type. Laws of Motion's unique "precision sizing" system lets shoppers get a near-custom fit with a quick quiz or a simple body scan you can do from your phone, giving you your highly specific Laws of Motion size made to fit your size and shape.
If you've ever noticed a particular area where blazers don't fit you the way you'd like them to, whether that's shoulders being too narrow or too wide, sleeves fitting too tight or loose, or whatever the issue may be, Laws of Motion is a great place to find a solution. With over 1200 micro sizes in their 00-40 range, there is almost certainly one that will feel tailor-made for you.
Best soft structure: T.W.I.N. (That's What I Need)
One of the best things about a good blazer is the instant structure it can add to an outfit's silhouette, but sometimes that structure comes at the cost of real comfort, as many blazers are made with stiffer fabrics to retain the shape better. But with this style from NYC label T.W.I.N., you do not have to choose between structure and comfort.
The sustainably sourced punto di Roma fabric (the original Ponte!) holds the blazer's hourglass shape while still feeling soft and yielding. It also wears wonderfully, resisting wrinkles and looking sharp even after a day of running around NYC to meetings.
One thing to note: T.W.I.N.'s sizing runs very generous in most stretch items, and that includes this 04 Double Breasted Blazer. I am a size 20 and haven't been an XL in years, but I am comfortably wearing an XL here. So unless you are looking for an oversized fit, I absolutely suggest sizing up in this style (and that goes for T.W.I.N.'s staple 02 Knit Blazer as well.
Best oversize: Universal Standard
One of the most important aspects of finding the perfect oversized blazer is the ability to size up. This might seem obvious and easy if you are on the lower end of the women's size range, but if you are closer to the top end of a brand's size range, you might not be able to get the same effect. So my favorite brand for oversize options is a brand with one of the most inclusive size ranges on the market: Universal Standard.
The Pinstripe Blazer is also part of Universal Standard's unique Fit Liberty program, which allows no-fee size swaps within a year of purchase on select styles (look for the blue Fit Liberty badge on the product page to see if an item qualifies). That program also takes the stress out of figuring out your size, as you can always swap it out if you realize another size would fit you better.
Best trendy: Finesse
If you are looking for of-the-moment trends and affordable designer-inspired pieces but don't want to go the full-on fast fashion route, Finesse is an option you should know. With demand-based production, Finesse is trying to minimize the waste inherent in the fast fashion business model without sacrificing trendiness, and I think they are threading that needle deftly. Whenever I cannot find a specific trend in plus sizes, I check Finesse and almost always can find it there.
Finesse's blazer selection is on the smaller end, variety-wise, but you can shop knowing that what they do have is current and cool, and at a very accessible price point.
The Zila Hourglass Blazer, for example, is a perfect take on the exaggerated proportions that are having a moment on the runways lately. I find that their styles run true to size too — just make sure to take a look at their size chart before ordering to confirm!
My one big tip for shopping Finesse is that you give yourself a big enough time cushion if you need a style for a specific event: Some of the shipping comes from overseas and can take up to 11 days if there are customs delays.
Best leather: Reformation Veda
There's just something about a good leather blazer that is almost transformative. You put it on and instantly feel cooler. It can give any outfit a bit of edge, and is a great way to add a fun twist to an otherwise basic look. But all leather blazers are not created equal, so getting one that will wear well and only get better with time just makes sense if you are investing in a genuine leather piece.
My top recommendation for leather jackets in general is always Veda, a cool woman-owned NYC label that makes the most stunning pieces, with dreamy nappa leather featuring prominently in their selection. I have (and adore) their cropped Baby Jane Moto jacket in that same leather, and I get compliments and people pretty much petting the butter-soft leather whenever I wear it. So if I was buying myself a leather blazer, this nappa leather option from Veda would be it.
