Bedrooms complete with private showers and TV have arrived at Twitter HQ as Elon Musk continues to look for ways to reduce expenses.
Dozens of unused offices in the San Francisco building have been turned into bedrooms over the last several days, two people familiar with the changes said. They asked not to be identified discussing private matters.
A photo viewed by Insider shows one of the new bedrooms. A Queen-sized bed was made up, with bedside tables and lamps on either side, and various pieces of Twitter merch, including a cap, laid out as a welcome present. A flat screen TV, a holdover from the office that can now be used for entertainment, was on one wall.
The new bedrooms, mainly full of Ikea furniture, are for Twitter employees who come from out of town to work at HQ in San Francisco, along with members of Musk's transition team, one of the people familiar with the situation said. Forbes reported earlier that some offices were being converted to bedrooms.
Jared Birchall, a business confidant who heads up Musk's family office Excession, is staying in one of the rooms, one of the people told Insider. There are also about 150 employees from Musk's other companies, such as Tesla and The Boring Company, who are currently working at Twitter and helping Musk with the transition, the other person added.
Even Musk is having a private room converted for his own use, another person familiar with the situation said. Twitter didn't respond to an email sent seeking comment on Tuesday
Following massive layoffs, many Twitter offices are not being used, while many employees coming to San Francisco have been staying at hotels, this person said. The conversions are another cost saving measure put in place by Musk, the person surmised. There has been no official communication to staff about the rooms, but people have been free to walk around HQ and check them out, the person added.
Some of the rooms are even being fitted with en suite bathrooms and showers, the person also said, so women at the company or on Musk's transition team can be more comfortable and "not have to walk through the office to showers," the person explained.
The billionaire has mentioned in emails and in all-hands meetings with Twitter employees that the company is in a "challenging" financial position.
In addition to about 70% of the company's workers either being laid off, fired or having resigned over Musk's "hardcore" work mandate, Musk has gone about limiting expense reimbursement levels, cutting benefits and perks, and doing away with the free catered food that Twitter employees had come to enjoy, even as they were ordered to come back to work in the office full-time.
