How Global Entry and TSA PreCheck Work
Global Entry and TSA PreCheck® make your travel experience significantly more pleasant by allowing you to get through airport security more quickly.
Both expedited airport screening programs are operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) under the Trusted Traveler umbrella program.
Global Entry
Global Entry members use automated kiosks to speed through identity verification when returning to the U.S. from international travel instead of waiting through long immigration lines. After answering a few basic questions on the kiosk, you'll be waved through to an officer who completes a brief verification as you walk through.
TSA PreCheck
Meanwhile, TSA PreCheck® allows you to pass through most domestic airport security checkpoints without a lot of rigmarole. You don't have to remove your shoes, belt, or light jacket; you don't have to take your laptop out of your bag; you don't even have to put your carry-on compliant toiletries in a separate bin.
To boot, there's also (usually) a separate lane exclusively for TSA PreCheck® members. Not only is this lane often shorter, but it processes much faster because you're behind others who don't have to remove their shoes and belt, either.
How to Apply for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry
To join either program, fill out the appropriate application on the CBP Trusted Traveler program website and pay your enrollment fee.
Once your application has been processed, CBP will run a rigorous background check and you will be required to complete an in-person interview at an enrollment center to process your application for approval. Some airports allow you to complete your in-person interview upon arriving at that location from an international destination.
Which Should I Get? Choosing Between Global Entry and TSA PreCheck
Global Entry enrollment includes TSA PreCheck® membership, so it usually makes more sense to enroll in Global Entry to get both benefits for the price of one.
TSA PreCheck® enrollment does not include Global Entry membership, so you'll have to complete separate applications and pay two registration fees if you apply for each program separately.
Is Global Entry or TSA PreCheck Free?
Trusted Traveler membership isn't free. In addition to passing a background check and in-person screening process, you'll need to pay for approval into either Trusted Traveler program. You also must renew your Trusted Traveler status every five years and pay a renewal fee.
There's one exception for free Global Entry enrollment — children under 18 do not need to pay the enrollment fee if their legal guardian has Global Entry membership (or has pending membership).
Global Entry and TSA PreCheck® both charge application fees, which you must pay if you aren't approved for membership.
Fortunately, people who have credit cards that cover TSA PreCheck® or Global Entry can essentially sign up for either program for free — simply pay your enrollment fee with one of these cards, and you'll receive a statement credit for the eligible amount you paid.
If you're already enrolled in a Trusted Traveler program, you also can use your card to pay for a friend or family member's application fee to get the statement credit.
Pro Tip: In late 2024, CBP raised the cost of Global Entry enrollment to $120, up from $100. Fortunately, most credit card issuers have also increased the credit amount for Global Entry applications.
How to Get CLEAR® Plus for Free With Credit Cards
CLEAR® Plus is yet another expedited security screening program that allows you to cut to the front of the security screening line at many TSA checkpoints around the country and even some stadiums.
A handful of travel cards offer statement credits to offset the fees associated with (the much more expensive) CLEAR airport security program.
The standard price for CLEAR® Plus is $199 per year, although discounts apply depending on your elite status with select airlines and hotels.
The following cards comp this expense in the form of a statement credit:
- The Platinum Card® from American Express — $695 annual fee (rates and fees)
- The Business Platinum Card® from American Express — $695 annual fee
- American Express® Green Card — $150 annual fee (does not include Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® reimbursement)
Each of these credit cards comes with a statement credit of up to $199 toward CLEAR® Plus each year.
The two Platinum cards above also offer free TSA PreCheck® or Global Entry, so they're arguably the best rewards cards for expedited security.
