Google Cloud recently posted its first profitable quarter on record, thanks in part to a reshuffling of costs into other parts of the business, and now all eyes are on whether it can maintain momentum.
Thomas Kurian, the CEO of Google Cloud, and 108 other top vice presidents and lieutenants are leading that charge to oversee all corners of the empire, including strategy, infrastructure, sales, and the company's Workspace suite of productivity tools.
When Insider last mapped out the Google Cloud org chart at the start of 2022, it had around 40,000 employees. Now, Kurian oversees a little over 51,000, according to internal data seen by Insider.
At the same time, Kurian's cadre of top lieutenants has shrunk from 12 direct reports to nine. The Cloud unit has seen some notable departures and reshuffles in recent months. In January, it elevated Adaire Fox-Martin to lead Cloud's Go-to-Market organization, appointing her to the position of Cloud's top sales chief. Kirsten Kliphouse, the lead of US sales, is no longer with Google, a Cloud spokesperson said. The Information first reported this departure.
It's been almost a year since Javier Soltero, the head of Google Workspace, departed and was replaced by Aparna Pappu. Since then, Google has unveiled a raft of generative-AI tools coming to Workspace as the company makes its big AI drive.
Insider obtained org charts that map out the new power structure at Google Cloud as it continues to chase Microsoft and Amazon Web Services, which are still ahead of Google in the US cloud-infrastructure market.
It's not clear how often Google updates its internal org charts, and while the data is recent, it's possible that some newer changes are not reflected.
